Citizens Business Bank Arena Environmental Initiatives
Citizens Business Bank Arena is dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint. Citizens Business Bank Arena's commitment to the environment is woven into the way the venue operates through AEG 1EARTH, AEG's environmental program that measures and quantifies the impact of our operations, identifies goals to guide decision-making, and provides tools to continually improve environmental performance. AEG 1EARTH has set company-wide 2020 environmental goals with a focus on energy, water and waste. Citizens Business Bank Arena tracks our progress toward these goals on a monthly basis through AEG Ecometrics which measures our resources consumed and wastes generated. Below are highlights from our environmental efforts:

ENERGY & CLIMATE
Citizens Business Bank Arena recognizes that certain human activities contribute to global climate change, which impacts public health and the environment. The best way for us to do our part is to reduce our overall energy demand through energy efficiency. Citizens Business Bank Arena has implemented a number of energy efficient technologies and policies which have resulted in a 40% reduction in energy consumption including:
- Enhanced use of the Building Management System (BMS) to program and monitor power usage in the facility.
- Improved operational guidelines on the use of indoor air-conditioning as well as lighting in the arena bowl, concourse and parking lots
- Installation of low voltage lighting relays that control the sequence and operation of all task, general and event lighting
- Use of fluorescent lighting instead of incandescent lighting and electronic ballast instead of magnetic ballast.
- Installation of variable frequency drives, meters and other efficiency monitoring technology on HVAC components
- Installation of Variable Speed Drives on all air handlers and one chiller
- Use of a solar powered compactor
Although we don’t have direct control over how our fans travel to our events, we aim to help reduce the carbon emissions from our fans’ commute through the following measures:
- Partnering with the Ontario Reign and Toyota to provide VIP parking to hybrid drivers
- Providing drop off locations for free shuttles from local hotels to events at the facility
- Providing ample bicycle parking for employees and guests
- Encouraging staff to rideshare to work through a carpooling incentive program
- Promoting use of the nearby public transit options, the Omni Trans Bus and the Metro Link train
- Use of electric golf carts by CBBA staff
WATER CONSERVATION
Living in a region that experiences drought, we believe water availability is one of the greatest challenges the world will face. We want to start doing our part now by being a leader in water conservation. Some of our water efficiency efforts include: Installation of waterless urinals, estimated to save over 40,000 gallons of fresh water per urinal per year
- Installation of metered, low-flow sink taps throughout the building which allow only a certain quantity of water to flow for a brief period of time
- Utilizing reclaimed water, procured from the City of Ontario, for all landscape maintenance
RECYCLING & WASTE DIVERSION
Solid waste generation is growing in volume and toxicity in most communities. The disposal of manufactured products that contain chemicals and metals into landfills causes pollution. We aim to minimize waste and divert as much as possible from landfill to recycling and other productive uses. Some of our waste reduction initiatives include:
- Providing recycling containers in all public areas including suites, offices, conference rooms and clubs
- Partnering with the Ontario Reign to collect recyclables during games
- Partnering with Levy Restaurants, to source separate glass and plastic from all concessions and restaurants, recycle fryer oil from kitchens and use china instead of disposable service ware for functions, whenever possible
- Recycling all cardboard, paper and wood pallets from facility operations
SUSTAINABLE PURCHASING
The manufacture, use and disposal of the products we buy contribute to our environmental footprint. We are committed to making smart purchasing decisions and selecting environmentally preferable products whenever feasible. Some of our sustainable purchasing initiatives including:
- Partnering with our janitorial supplier to use
- Johnson Diversity green certified cleaning products.
- microfiber mop heads and cloths instead of paper towels
- trash bag liners made with 50% less plastic than normal liners
- detergent free carpet cleaner
- Partnering with our food service provider, Levy restaurants to provide:
- biodegradable plates and cups at all home games, concerts and special events in the Luxury Suites and San Manuel Club
- biodegradable to-go containers for its press and media dining rooms in addition to other hospitality areas throughout Citizens Business Bank Arena
- sustainable, local and organic food at the Chef’s Harvest in the San Manuel Club including natural beef, organic poultry, and hormone free pork products
- Installing carpeted mats at all entrances; this reduce dirt brought into the facility by 70% improves air quality, and reduce the amount of cleaning and cleaning chemicals required
EDUCATION & OUTREACH
As an entertainment venue we have an amazing opportunity to raise environmental awareness among our staff and guests. Internally, we educate staff on ways to improve the environmental performance of our venue and engage them through:
- An on-going Sustainability Committee made up of representatives from each department who meet quarterly to identify opportunities and initiatives to lessen the venue’s impact on the environment
- Including green tips in our monthly electronic newsletters and environmental info in our Fan Guide
- Participating in environmental stewardship such as tree planting events coordinated with the City of Ontario
- Featuring environmental groups in our annual Season of Giving campaign
We also engage our guests through environmental outreach such as:
- Participating annually in environmental outreach events such as Earth Hour and America Recycles Day.
- Hosting annual "Go Green" nights in partnership with the Ontario Reign dedicated to providing fans with information on the environment
- Featuring the AEG 1EARTH logo on our electronic billboard outside the facility every 2.5 seconds
